Charleston SC

Charleston S C

Charleston SC has been one of our favorite EAST COAST VACATIONS for a long time... to the extent we drove down from Pittsburgh, Pa, a 12 hour non stop drive. We've been there 3 times, each time staying on Kiawah Island in a rented condo which we found through a local Pittsburgh newspaper. This was over 10 years ago, and surprisingly, as we look at the inflation picture, the costs of rental have not gone up, but if anything, have gone down. Why?  Because many time share owners are pressed with ever increasing maintenance fees and want to fund them. Now to be frank not many properties here are Time Share but are privately owned, but those costs have also gone up and $4.00 per gallon gas has eased the demand a little.

So what's the big attraction in Charleston... or are there many?  Let's look at...

What to Do on A Charleston SC Vacation

What to Do on A Charleston SC Vacation can be answered very easily by the term "many many many" things! Part of a vacation is supposed to be pure relaxation and a time to chill out.. so the Charleston SC beaches, particularly a Kiawah Island are great.  By the way, the island is separated from the mainland by not much more than us northerners would call a small river.  So one thing to do is to spend time on the beach.

View of The Straw Market at Charleston

There's so much history in the area, and a day into town can be spent touring many of the restored old houses, and in fact, you should plan on buying tickets in advance for a Charleston Walking Tour. But these are not the only old houses, and for this one, you'll be in the car.. but let's stay in downtown Charleston for a little bit where you'll enjoy the straw market, one of a kind in the entire country.  Ok, so we have  day for town, but of course while there, you want to tour Battery Park and all the history associated with national anthem.

Next day.. let's be in the car, and having planned early, you know of at least 4 plantations you want to visit.
We had a very interesting guide on our last tour who is still re-living the Civil War just as if it was just last month that General Grant came through and burned one of her favorite places to the ground.

Patriots Point

Well, speaking of war, let's take some time.. probably a day.. to visit Patriot's point! No East Coast vacation to Charleston SC would be without taking this trip!  Probably the guys in your vacation party will enjoy this more as you can visit the Yorktown, a WW 2 Aircraft carrier, but that's not all. On the civilian side is the first nuclear powered commercial ship. Then there's a submarine, and so much more!

So we have a day at the beach, recovering from our trip in, an easy day in down town, a day touring plantations, day 4 at Patriots point, another day at the beach, then maybe fitting in some golf or sailing, and of course.. every evening... some great restaurants, preferably local ones with local southern cuisine and seafood!

Assuming the vacation is only for a week, we've only scratched the surface. Remember, this is not some commercial writer web site but if you read the welcome page, this is a real guy, with a real family and in our case it was Mom & Dad (us), married Dau and her husband, and 4 grandchildren at the time, ages 3-12. This could work now that Mom and Dad  are a bit older, so is Dau and Husband, and kids are still single and 16 to 20 something and graduated from college..

Plan this vacation. Now we'll share a link to a commercial site sharing how Charleston was awarded the 2012 Travelers Choice award as the #1 winner for East Coast vacations, and as a visitor there ourselves, we can understand why. (Click here for that award) See some CHARLESTON HOTEL sites

We think that once you've been there, you'll want to include this East Coast Vacation destination at Charleston as a place to return.
